Development of Nitrate Management Strategies for the Village of Port Williams

WRP2016-001

Scope:

  • Sampling program will be conducted to determine the extent of nitrate contamination of groundwater in the Port Williams drinking water system, as well as the variation in nitrate levels seasonally and year-to-year
  • Develop a record of baseline conditions in the distribution system by monitoring a range of parameters including chlorine, lead, and iron

Benefits:

  • Provide operators with a clear picture of current nitrate levels and distribution system conditions within the water system

Outcomes:

  • Recommendations and findings:
    • Routinely measure nitrate levels in wells (project as well as personal wells)
    • As corrosion was identified, review service line materials for corrosion potential
    • Biological denitrification effective in reducing nitrate concentrations
