WRP2016-008

Scope:

  • Quantitative and qualitative evaluation of the different robotic milking systems currently employed on Dairy farms in Nova Scotia
  • Compare the volume of water use across robotic systems and more importantly to also consider the cumulative impact of water use on other aspects of the farm operation relating to sustainability
  • Labour requirements and quality of life also considered from a qualitative perspective

Benefits

  • provide a comparison of the direct impact of technology and in the identification of efficiency measures
  • public awareness and increase support from strategic actions taken by farms to manage our provinces crucial water resources

Outcomes:

  • Study adjusted to review types of robotic milking systems
  • Identified that there may be a misunderstanding between flow and pressure and the amount of water being consumed
  • Fact sheet to educate on the use of high-pressure nozzles in development
  • Recommendation to conduct project with site specific water meters to determine where the water is being used most in the system
