International Women’s Day – Sara Swinkels

Meet Sara Swinkels, the newly-elected President of Nova Scotia Young Farmers and our first #IWD2024 highlight!

Sara’s passion for agriculture was ignited at an early age through her involvement in 4-H and growing up listening to farm stories from her mom’s dairy-farming family.

While Sara didn’t initially imagine herself working in agriculture while choosing her post-secondary education, she knew she did not want a traditional 9-5 job. Sara found her niche as a Registered Massage Therapist, which has allowed her the flexibility to support both her family as a mother and her husband on their dairy farm in Antigonish County. She shared that finding her role in the operation was a struggle, especially after becoming a mom. However, she has embraced her supportive contributions that are often behind the scenes at this time. This can include anything from handling bookkeeping to parts runs, taking their son to the field to ride with her husband, being a soundboard for his ideas, and helping with any other jobs needed!

Sara has enjoyed her involvement on the Nova Scotia Young Farmers board as it has allowed her to see every sector of agriculture and she has recently stepped into her new role as President.

Sara’s message on International Women’s Day:

“To all the remarkable women in agriculture: Your dedication, resilience, and innovation are the backbone of this industry. Keep breaking barriers, blazing trails, and cultivating a brighter future for generations to come. Your work is essential, and your impact is immeasurable.”
