Our next #IWD2024 highlight is Dr. Wilma Schenkels, Chief Veterinary Officer at the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture.
Wilma’s interest in agriculture began growing up on her family’s dairy farm and was nurtured by her involvement in 4-H, attending the Nova Scotia Agriculture College, and meeting the many inspiring individuals who planted the seeds of passion for a career in agriculture.
She has had the pleasure of working in the agriculture industry since graduating from Atlantic Veterinary College, first as a private practice veterinarian and since 2020, with the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture. “I have met and worked with remarkable people whose enthusiasm, dedication, and innovative nature are contagious and challenge us all to be the best we can be as we work to support the growth of the agriculture industry.”
Wilma’s message on International Women’s Day: 🌱
“The 2024 International Women’s Day theme is “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress”. During my career in agriculture I have witnessed women moving from ever-important background roles, on farms and in agriculture careers, to the forefront. We celebrate this achievement by continuing to support and advance everyone with a passion for agriculture as they reach their full potential. Together we can ‘accelerate progress’ in an industry we love.”
