Policy & Advocacy
Since 1895, the NSFA has worked to develop strong relationships with industry leaders, elected officials, policy makers, government representatives, and other key stakeholders to advance the interests of Nova Scotia’s agriculture industry.
While the role of advocating for farmers has changed over the years, the NSFA has always been committed to a grassroots process for developing policy solutions that fit farmers needs, while advocating for the continued success of agriculture in the province.
Policy solutions are approved by the NSFA membership via resolutions at the Annual General Meeting, analyzed and converted into policy positions statements by the NSFA’s Policy Advisory Committee, and approved as official policy positions of the federation by the Council of Leaders. NSFA Staff and Executive then work to advance the positions adopted by the organization through a government relations approach that emphasizes collaboration with commodity organizations, farmers, industry partners, and government.
The NSFA is primarily focused on the Nova Scotia government, and we participate as members of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture to elevate members policy positions that are targeted at the Government of Canada.
