Living Labs Project Session: Land Swap

March 24, 2022 @ 10:30 am - 11:30 am

The NSFA has submitted its application for the Agricultural Climate Solutions Living Lab program. The Living Lab model uses on-farm research to target producer-driven questions. While the application is awaiting approval, we would like to continue to engage with and get feedback from producers to refine our projects.

Three sessions are currently scheduled. The first, on March 8th, will cover one of our four proposed projects which will be led by Perennia. It will focus on using cover crops in horticulture and field crop systems to increase carbon sequestration and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The second session, on March 18th, will cover our Riparian Zone and Shelterbelt project with will be led by the Clean Annapolis River Project. This project will look at how establishing these riparian zones and shelterbelts can increase carbon sequestration, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve important services like pollination, biodiversity, and water quality.

Our third project session, on March 24th, will be the Land Swap, led by the NSFA. This project will take horticulture fields out of rotation and into grazed pasture for three years. The field will then revert back to the horticulture production. We will be assessing how well this allows the field to increase carbon storage and how resilient that stored carbon is when moving back into horticulture.

These sessions will include an overview of the proposed project and an opportunity to ask questions about the project and the overall Living Lab program. We will also be looking for feedback on the project design and treatments.
