The Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture (NSFA) and Rural Roots Engineering and Design are collaborating on an important initiative to assess the potential impacts of implementing the 2020 Building Code in comparison to the 1995 Farm Building Code. This work will also cover updates to the Fire Code as well. This is work being done in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Municipal Affairs and Housing. To ensure we have an accurate understanding of the financial implications this change may have on our industry, we are requesting your assistance in providing data on farm buildings over 600m² (6,500ft²).
These changes to the building code could have significant financial implications for farms across the province. Industry participation in this project is vital to help shape future policies affecting farm buildings and protect your bottom line. With input from 50% of each commodity group, we can build an accurate picture of the potential costs and identify any challenges the new code may introduce.
We kindly request the following information:
• Location of your farm (county, town, or postal code)
• Number of buildings on your farm
For each building:
• Floor area
• Use
• Age
• Construction type
For manure storage:
• Storage volume
• Age
• Construction type
Many farm insurance policies contain this data for each building. If available, these details may be forwarded directly to NSFA and Rural Roots.
To facilitate ongoing communication, including future surveys and invitations to stakeholder meetings, we ask that you kindly provide an email address. Additionally, providing your email will enter you into a draw for one of 5 $100 gift cards of your choice, or you can choose to direct the prize money to a charity of your choice
To submit your information, please fill out the form (approx 5-10 mins) via the following link: Building Code Form
The deadline for submission is December 31st, 2024.
Your participation is critical in helping us accurately predict the financial impacts of this change and in shaping the future of farm infrastructure in our region. Should you have any questions, or if you’d like more information, please don’t hesitate to reach out. NSFA Office: (902) 893-2293
