Members of the NSFA Council of Leaders, in conjunction with the NSFA strategic plan, have had discussions on improved public perception of farming in Nova Scotia and enhanced communication efforts with public, media and government. From discussions and research, the outcome was to develop and implement a tactical plan based on a vision that, “the public has a positive opinion of Nova Scotia Agriculture”. The Federation certainly recognizes that communication to our membership is equally important and will continue, but envision this as a separate strategy with a unique message structure to a more targeted audience.
It became quite obvious through preliminary research that it seems to makes sense that the agricultural community can be more personalized and “made real” to the urban community. So….If there are great stories to tell – we have to tell them! If there are interesting people in the agricultural community – then let’s introduce farmers to the urbanites who seem interested in learning more. If there are wonderful innovations occurring – what are they? If people don’t know where food comes from – let’s tell them. If people don’t know who their farmer is – let’s fix that.
This is a strong message that can be best managed and promoted by us, the farm community. Development of web based resource with the use of social media (facebook, twitter and you tube) was an obvious tactic to reach the urban population with our messaging.
